A Jamaican-Inspired Herbal Tincture For Relieving Pain & Headaches
Throughout Jamaican folk traditions, herbs, prayer, and strong alchohol have often been brought together in home remedies and spiritual preparations. Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum is especially familiar in Jamaican households and has been traditionally used as a base for various herbal preparations.
In this spiritual preparation, the herbs are combined with white rum and then consecrated through prayer and Scripture, creating a preparation intended for external spiritual and traditional use for aches, discomfort, and headaches.

The Spiritual Meaning Behind the Herbs
Each herb brings its own traditional symbolism and character to the preparation:
Cloves: Have long been associated with protection, strength, and cleansing.
Black pepper: Is traditionally connected with protection, removing unwanted energy, and spiritual strength.
Cinnamon: Is often associated with warmth, attraction, prosperity, and energetic movement.
Rosemary: Has a long history of being used symbolically for cleansing, remembrance, protection, and purification.
Lavender: Is traditionally associated with peace, calmness, relaxation, and spiritual cleansing.
Coconut oil: Is traditionally viewed as a nourishing and purifying carrier oil and can be incorporated into spiritual preparations.
Together, these ingredients create a preparation that combines the traditional qualities of the herbs with prayer and spiritual intention.
Phase 1: How to Prepare the Herbal Tincture
Begin with a glass mason jar. Add approximately ½ teaspoon of each dried herb into the jar:
-
½ teaspoon whole cloves
-
½ teaspoon lightly crushed black peppercorns
-
½ teaspoon lightly crushed cinnamon
-
½ teaspoon dried rosemary
-
½ teaspoon dried lavender buds
Place the herbs into the mason jar. Then pour the Wray & Nephew white rum over the herbs until the jar is filled and the herbs are completely covered. Then close the lid.
Phase 2: The Consecration
Place the white candle on top of the jar lid. Light the candle, then say Psalm 34. After that, ask God to bless the herbs and the preparation and to allow the natural properties of the herbs to be used for their intended purpose.
“Lord, please bless and consecrate this herbal preparation. May the herbs within this tincture be used for healing, comfort, and relief. I ask that pain, headaches, discomfort, and heaviness be removed when this special tincture is used. Amen.”
Once the prayer and Scripture reading are complete, store it in a cool, dark place, such as a kitchen cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat. Every 2–3 days, gently shake the jar to help keep the herbs distributed throughout the liquid.
Before applying the tincture to your body, pour some of the mixture into some virgin coconut oil and make it into a soft paste, then anoint your entire body or where the pain is mostly affecting you (example: forehead, chest, back, feet, neck, legs, arms, waist).
How Long Should It Sit?
Some traditional preparations are used after sitting for only a short period, while others are allowed to mature longer. For this preparation, two weeks allows the herbs more time to infuse into the rum and become thoroughly saturated.
Some people choose to begin using their preparation after approximately one day, while others prefer to wait the full two weeks. If your intention is to create a fully infused and fortified herbal preparation, allowing it to sit for two weeks is the preferred approach.
